Vijai Patchineelam at JA.CA

The artist from Rio de Janeiro is taking part in JA.CA’s Residency Program 2012/1 which is going to happen throughout june and july. This year, 6 artists are going participate in the program and will develop their work interacting with the local community.

Patchineelam took a master in visual arts at the Konstfack University College, in Sweden. For his residency at JA.CA, the artist proposes the search for what is specific in places that have always been collective-private within large urban centers. The combination of private and public roles is what interests him in this program. The living spaces with other artists will work as a platform for development of plans, actions and meditations. He intends to open his work process to visitors through open workshops and chats.

OPEN CALL RESULTS – JACA 2012

JA.CA Center of Art and Technology is pleased to announce the result of the open call for the June and July residency.

We got lots of projects that are consistent with the Center’s mission. The task of choosing a group of 04 artists was difficult. Therefore, the selection committee drafted a set of criteria based on the main objectives of the program, focusing on projects that can produce different reverberations in an artist residency. The panel prioritized projects that were more susceptible to possible collaborations during the experience of sharing a workspace. The selected projects dialogue and complement each other. Despite that, they suggest possible connections with other JA.CA’s parallel projects.

Combining consistent portfolios with provocative proposals around the context of the residency, the artists selected were: Vijai Patchineelam (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Meera Singh (Canada), Alejandro Rojas and Edgar Tobón Mazo (Colombia), Ganz and Agnes Louise Linke (Belo Horizonte, Brazil). The projects take advantage of the opportunities offered by JACA in different ways and should give new shape to researches in each artists production. Besides the issues already highlighted by the poetics of these artists, this will be a good opportunity to reflect on the ways in which the idea of community can be made central to the conduction of experiments in the field of contemporary art.

The selection panel was composed by Paulo Miyada, Beatriz Lemos, Isaura Pena and Natacha Rena, who will follow the development of the projects during the residency. During these two months, JACA will offer several activities open to the interested public: workshops, lectures and readings of portfolios in the Center and other institutions participating in the project.

Located in Jardim Canada, in the city of Nova Lima, Minas Gerais, JACA has been encouraging artistic projects since 2010, using technologies that dialogue with the local reality, either through educational stimulus or provocations and collaborative practices.
